Interview: Giants At Large

>> It's always unfortunate when a good local band splits up. In this case, however, the demise of 2 bands actually led to the creation of Giants At Large, one of the newest bands here on Long Island. I was able to see their first show last weekend, and although they have yet to release more than a 20 second song clip, the crowd went wild. This is a group of guys who have virtually mastered the art of having great stage presence, and having had such a great start, I can see this band really taking off.

Introduce yourself.
My name is Matt Lagattuta, I am 20 years old, and I sing and play guitar in the band Giants At Large.

What are some of your earliest influences that made you want to get into music?
The first two albums I ever bought were Blink-182's Enema of the State, and Sr-71's Now you see Inside. After hearing those albums I knew I wanted to be in a band.

How have your experiences in other bands helped you with this one?
From previous bands we learned to work hard and no matter what other people say, if you love what you're doing who cares what other people think. People are always going to be critics.

How did you guys get together to form this band?
Travis, CJ, and I played in another band that broke up this summer. When that ended the three of us knew we wanted to stick together. Within the first couple days of getting this band started Brian got in touch with Travis wanting to get involved, so he jammed with us and hung out, and it's been going really well since.

You played your first show as Giants At Large last weekend at Patent Pending's CD/DVD release show. How was that experience?
It was probably one of the best experiences I've ever had. All we have released music-wise is a 20 second clip of a song and the only words are "I don't wanna write sad songs anymore", and to see people crowd surfing to the stage singing that was such a good feeling.

Do you have any other shows coming up?
Were playing October 14th at the Vibe Lounge with You Me and Everyone We Know, Man Overboard, Take Cover, and our friends in This Condition. We're also playing November 20th at Vibe again, it's our best friends in the band Casari's last show, and if it's ready it'll be our EP release too.

What would you say to make someone want to listen to your music?
We make honest pop-punk music with some indie influence. Everything that could have went wrong, went wrong for us this summer and we wrote a really positive record about keeping your head up even when everything sucks. We're not one of those bands that fake our instruments or use live auto tune, everything about our music is real.

What do you think about the music scene here on Long Island?
It's tough, I used to say it was just okay, but the LI music scene has been nothing but great to us. A brand new awesome venue just opened up in Patchogue called Karma so that's a plus. Kids just need to keep supporting local bands, every band starts small and needs the support from people who enjoy their music.

You guys have been working on an EP. Tell us about it.
We're actually almost done with our EP. We recorded everything but the vocals in my basement ourselves and we've been recording vocals in the city. We're going to post a song within a week or so. It's got an intro, 5 songs, and 2 interludes. If everything is finished on time we're looking to release it at our show at the Vibe Lounge on November 20th.

How do you guys find new music to listen to?
The internet is great, I'm always at the Vibe Lounge watching bands seeing what's out there.

What have you been listening to a lot lately?
The two bands I was listening to A LOT when writing this EP were two defunct Long Island bands, Latterman and Lux Couragous. If you've never heard of them I seriously suggest checking them out.

What are some goals you want to accomplish with the band?
We want to take the band as far as it can possibly go, and were willing to work as hard as we can to get there.

How can fans contact you, or hear your music?
I think were making a facebook page? Not sure, but I do know were on twitter @giantsatlarge, or get in touch with us on our personal facebooks or twitters (@mattlags, @sxetravis, @savesthebrian, @cjthehero). Myspace is cool too, www.myspace.com/giantsatlarge.

Is there anything else you want to say?
We're going to be posting a song from our right now untitled EP very very soon so keep an eye out for that. Thank you to anyone who has helped promote, came to either of the shows, bought merch, or anything! Hopefully we'll see you 10/14 or 11/20 and hopefully we'll be seeing everyone else off the island this winter, thanks!

Bonus Round:

Favorite:
Album(s)? The Lawrence Arms - The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Ataris - Song Long Astoria, Brand New - Your Favorite Weapon.
Thing to do on a Friday night? Go to/play a show!
Place on Long Island? Travis' place. We hang out, listen to vinyl records, and watch netflix. I know, were kind of lame.

This or that:
Karma or The Vibe Lounge? Even though I hate the stairs, The Vibe Lounge.

Moe's or Taco Bell? This is so tough. My taste buds say Moe's, but my wallet says Taco Bell. Gonna have to go with Taco Bell here.
Angelina or Snooki (from Jersey Shore)? Angelina!!! The rest of the guys in the band all pick Snooki, they're a bunch of stupid pizones.

Members Only: In the band, who is
Strangest?
Cj, once he licked a mosquito off a wall.
Most organized? Travis, he has a Murse (Male Purse).
The biggest flirt? Cj, just talk to him, you'll see what I mean.
Most creative? This one time I made Cj a funnel out of a lamp shade, garbage bag, and a plastic bottle, sorry guys gotta give this one to me. (Proof)
Toughest? None of us are tough, but Travis has tattoos so he looks the toughest.

Seen It Live: 9/17&18/10

>> Typically, going to one show can brighten my whole week. The atmosphere, the people, and of course the music are things I really live for. Last weekend, I was able to attend 2 great shows- one on Friday at The Vibe Lounge (Rockville Centre, NY), and one on Saturday at Club Karma (Patchogue, NY). I was worn out after everything was said and done, but in the end, it was well worth the exhaustion.
  • Friday September 17, 2010 - Virtually anytime Phone Calls From Home (@pcfhband) announces a show on Long Island, you know I'll be there. Seeing that Score 24 (@Score_24), Corey Balsamo (@coreybalsamo), & For The Foxes were also on the line up for this show pretty much guaranteed my attendance. After I got to the venue (& had some Taco Bell, courtesy of @pcfhzack), I was able to catch the last song of For The Foxes' set. Like Corey had told me beforehand, they seemed really good. The crowd seemed to think so, too. I wish I could have seen more than just one song, but that's life. Next up was Phone Calls From Home. As I've said in the past, PCFH is a band that always puts on a great show, regardless of the venue. They played a couple of shows here on Long Island this summer, and the crowds coming to their shows have gradually grown bigger and more enthusiastic. Getting to literally watch their fan base expand and gain energy has been an amazing experience, and I hope to see that continue. Corey Balsamo hit the stage next. The vocals were somewhat hard to hear at times, but all things considered it was still a great set. This was my third time seeing him live, and as usual, he did not disappoint. Score 24 played last. Playing shows in your hometown certainly has its perks - most of the crowd knew every word. The 'Long Island music scene' consists of such a passionate group of people, and it's always amazing to see that support and dedication at shows like this one. After everything was said & done, I called night one a success and began looking forward to the next day's event.

  • Saturday September 18, 2010 - This was a day that I, and many others had been looking forward to for a long time - Patent Pending's CD/DVD release show. The show was at a new venue called Karma in Patchogue, NY. When you drive into the parking lot, you can't really see the place at first, but there's a big "620" on the side of the building that let's you know you're at the right place. It had plenty of room in front of the stage so that you don't have to worry about getting thrown into a mosh pit or something if you don't want to. There was also even more space on each side of the stage where merchandise was sold. Overall, I liked the place. Again, I ended up arriving late, but I got there just in time to see For Those Who Know play. A mutual friend had told me about this band a while back, so I was glad to finally see what I'd been missing out on. Their set was solid, & I really enjoyed it. Giants At Large (@giantsatlarge) played next. This was the band I was most excited to see, especially considering the fact that this was their first show together. Brian (bass/vocals) has been keeping me updated with the band's progress since they've been together, so I've been looking forward to seeing them perform for a while. I'm proud to say that they genuinely blew me away. Their set was even better than I had expected, and the crowd went crazy. People everywhere were crowd surfing, moshing, and even managing to sing along. The energy in the room, and the performance itself were just amazing. If you don't know Giants At Large yet, I'd suggest looking them up. They're almost done recording their EP, and plan on posting a song "within a week or two", which gives everyone something to look forward to. Last but certainly not least, Patent Pending hit the stage to close out the show. This was my fourth time seeing this band live, and they always put on an incredible show. For Patent Pending, a show is more than the band playing songs on a stage in front of an audience. Each show is like a family reunion with those crazy relatives you wish you saw more often. The atmosphere at each and every show this band plays gives me chills- It's one of the most amazing things I've ever been a part of. During their set, Joe (vocals) told us that there was a recently engaged couple at this show. The best part about that story was the fact that the couple had met at a Patent Pending concert a while back. That's just one example of what I'm talking about here. Each song, each performance, each statement- Everything just strengthens that bond between band and fan, or in this case, between friends. After they played their hearts out in the venue, the band, a bunch of fans, and I headed over to a nearby Burger King parking lot for an acoustic set (pictured above). Joe & Josh played a good number of songs, including requests. It was a great experience for all of us. Before calling it a night, Joe's brother, Robert, played a song by his band Mania In Urbania. This was the second time a band had really impressed me that night. Robert admitted that their demo doesn't sound as good as he would have liked it to, but nothing compares to seeing it live... even if it was only one acoustic song this time. Next time you see Mania In Urbania is playing a show near you, do yourself a favor & check it out. It goes without saying that the Ragostas are a very musically inclined family that never ceases to impress. All in all, this was an incredible show for so many reasons.

RIP Therefore I Am

>> Therefore I Am has called it quits. You can read the band's official statement on the matter below.
An Announcement.
by Therefore I Am Published on September 22, 2010
I met Alex, Brian, Chris and Jim on Pratt Street in Allston, MA during the spring of 2006. Therefore I Am played music before I came into the picture but my accompaniment marked the beginning of something new. I joined their band on a whim. I dropped out of school, bought an amp and hit the road. The aforementioned members of Therefore I Am became my family, my closest friends and my life. They presented to me several life-changing opportunities and plugged me into a social circle I wouldn’t have otherwise had the pleasure of knowing. During the better part of the 5 years we spent in a van, the 5 of us bonded, fought, partied, smiled, argued, sang along together and learned to love each other. We will always love each other.
It is with great dismay that I am announcing the end of Therefore I Am.
There are a lot of reasons behind our decision but we would prefer to keep them personal. We are all still friends and that’s what matters most. This was by no means an easy decision for any of us. Life changes and you must change with it, regardless of the frustrations that come with said adjustments. The 5 of us are lucky and blessed to have had the opportunities we were given.
In the past 5 years, we’ve come a long way. We’ve toured with heroes, crossed oceans and did a lot of things we never thought we’d be able to do in our respective lifetimes, let alone our twenties. Most importantly, we’ve acquired a large collection of friends and created an insane catalogue of memories. To say the very least, we’ve seen a lot of stuff.
We’d like to thank all of the friends we’ve made and all of you who supported us with your thoughts, floors, roofs, showers, meals, hometowns, shows, tastes and love. You were as much a part of Therefore I Am as we were. You are connected.
Please join us for our final shows November 19th at Rocko’s in Manchester, NH and November 20th at Lupo’s in Providence, RI. We will be joined by some great friends and we hope to see you all there one last time.
-Travis Alexander and Therefore I Am
>> The band will play their last two shows on November 19 at Rocko’s in Manchester, NH and November 20 at Lupo’s in Providence, RI.

RIP Sing It Loud

>> Sing It Loud is unfortunately the latest band to announce a break-up. The band posted the following message about the split:

After three years of playing music together, we (Pat, Ben, Nate, Chris and Kieren) have decided to step away from Sing It Loud. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us through this amazing part of our lives. We have been given a rare opportunity to do something many people never get the chance to do, and for that we are eternally grateful. There is no drama or bad blood between any of us, we are all going out together the same way we came into this- as friends. There comes a time in everyone’s life when they need to make choices and steps towards what will make them happy, and we are all ready to take those steps in our lives. We have grown so much from this, and are ready for the next chapter in our lives. This will not be the last you hear from any of us. We all plan on continuing with our musical careers, so we hope the amazing support from Sing It Loud fans will continue as we do. A series of final shows will be announced soon, so be on the look out for those and for what we do next. Thank you all for enriching our lives and giving us the chance to share our music with you. We could not be more content with what we have accomplished.
Love,
Kieren, Pat, Ben, Nate, Chris

Interview: Heinali and Matt Finney

>> When I first heard about Heinali and Matt Finney, I was curious about how two individuals from two different countries could manage to make music together. Their songs are as unique as their situation- I've never heard anything like their Lemonade EP. I got an idea of how the artists overcome the challenges they face because of distance just by speaking to them, but they won't let anything stop them from doing what they love. Their enthusiasm is tremendous, and quite impressive. They had these questions answered within a few hours of receiving them, regardless of the time difference. They are clearly passionate about their music, and that dedication has served them well thus far.

Introduce yourselves. (Name, age, instrument)
Heinali: Heinali, not too old I hope, can't really play any of them...
Matt: I'm Matt. 21. Vocals.

Where are you from? Describe the local music scene there.
Heinali: Ukraine. It's absent. Zero. Nada. Nihil. Maybe except for
some occasional parties and concerts of extremely low budget.
Matt: Millbrook, Alabama. There's not a much of a scene. A couple of
screaming bands and that's it.

What are some of your earliest influences that made you want to get into music?
Heinali: My earliest influences are Nine Inch Nails, the Sisters of
Mercy and Coil. But nothing made me want to get into music. It was
totally spontaneous and kept being not too serious for a long period
of time.
Matt: The first band that I remember listening to was Tears For Fears.
My sister had their greatest hits CD and video and she used to play
them all the time. I still love that band. Catchy as can be. Nirvana
were the first that floored me though.

How did you guys first get together & decide to make music?
Matt: We met through Myspace and became quick friends. My band (Finneyerkes) had been on a break and it's still on a inactive. I asked Heinali if he'd be interested in working on some songs and that turned into our first EP. We've been working together since.

For those who haven't heard it yet, how would you describe your sound?
Heinali: Cinematic, dark, eclectic.

What is your writing process like?
Heinali: Usually it's slightly different every time, sometimes absolutely different. Though I tend to construct the composition on the some kind of theme... could be melodic or timbral or rhythmic. Usually at night. Matt sends me over his lyrics recorded and I compose the music. I do a couple of drafts and send them to Matt for the critique.

What was the general inspiration behind your Lemonade EP?
Heinali: Life. In terms of music that influenced it's Nine Inch Nails, Nadja, Angelic Process, My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division, Nirvana...
Matt: The past year. It was an extremely rough one. It's all of that anger, bitterness, and disillusionment mixed with anxiety attacks.

What’s your favorite part about being in this band?
Heinali: I have to choose of sex, drugs and industrial.
Matt: Working with one of the best composers out there. The sex, drugs, and industrial don't hurt either.

What are some of the hardships you face because you live in different countries?
Heinali: Can't do gigs, can't rehearse, can't hang out together.
Matt: I'm with Heinali. This is both what we love to do. We both give it a hundred percent but we still can't reach people the way the band down the street can because they have access to the folks in bars/clubs. It's very discouraging but we have a lot of amazing listeners that like what we do and it's a huge motivator. We'll work through it.

What do you consider your biggest accomplishment so far as a band?
Heinali: We are doing what we love.

How can fans contact you, or hear your music?

iTunes is coming soon and a billion other online music stores that we can't think of at this second. be on the look out!
(*Heinali & Matt's Lemonade EP has recently been added to iTunes. Click here to pick up a copy!)

What are some goals that you want to accomplish with your music in the future?
Heinali: Breaking out of the loneliness again and again and again.
Matt: To make each one better than the one that came before it.

What do you guys have planned for the rest of 2010?
Heinali: New album! Or EP
Matt: New album and then another.

Is there anything else you want to say?
Matt: Thanks so much to everyone that's taken their hard earned money and bought our music/t-shirts. Thanks to all of the blogs for their help. Thanks to everyone that's downloaded and told a friend. You all should be nominated for sainthood. And, thank you Kate!

RIP Between The Trees

>> Between The Trees posted an official statement on their MySpace earlier today stating that the band will be splitting up by the end of the year. You can read this statement below.

Well, this is the beginning of a letter that I never wanted to figure out how to write. I'll probably write, rethink, and re-write again 10 times over, but it's not going to change the purpose of it no matter how hard I try.

It is with regret that I announce that Between The Trees will be disbanding by the end of this year. It's not a decision that we all fully agree with, but it's a decision that is final.

After 5 years of being a band we've had our highs and and we've also had our lows. Each member at some point has wondered what life outside of the band might be like. As of late, Ryan has stated that he had lost his drive and passion to continue with Between The Trees. With that, it obviously raised questions that needed to be answered. So after much thought and prayer, Ryan feels in his heart that it is just time to move on. He still loves every bit of it and, just like all of us, is thankful for the friends and fans that we've met over the years. However, when it's time, I guess it's time.

It is impossible to sum up an obsession that has consumed our lives for this many years. Anything that I write will never, ever truly express how we feel about this past stage of our lives. Truthfully and honestly words cannot describe it…trying to show it in a measly blog or news post is an injustice, but such is life.

We've had an incredible life over the past 5 years. We've seen more of this world in our early 20's than most people will see in their lifetime, and we were blessed to do it playing music that we love. We've met amazing people, interestingly odd people, as well as numerous friends that will extend well beyond the existence of this band. We've spent hours upon hours in a van driving to cities and towns hoping to meet and win over new fans, and usually always left more than satisfied in calling this our job. It's been an amazing journey and we wouldn't trade this experience for anything in this world.

We want to thank our families for every ounce of support since the beginning. It's not easy telling your Mom and Dad when you're 18, 19, and 21 that you're not going to college, but have decided to hop in a van and drive around with a couple friends. Also want to thank our Wives/Fiancees, as it was also never easy saying "see you in a month" more than 8 or 9 times a year. Our thanks to our friend/Manager/twice removed Record Label owner David McKenna for taking a chance and being there through it all, as well as many other business men and women for taking a chance on a group of guys playing music they wrote in a cramped bed room. Thanks to the faithfuls that were at every show in a 4 hour radius, and a handful that really didn't know what a radius was. And last, but certainly not least, being as least cliche as possible, thanks Jesus for giving us this opportunity. It's safe to say that we would have never written a single song had it not been for you, so thank you.

So, where do we go from here?

We're going to continue as planned with our tour with The Almost coming up starting on September 14th and will finish up at the end of the month. Past that we currently have nothing planned. However, we've decided that we wanted to give anyone who wanted to see us one last chance to hear some songs.

With that said, if enough requests come in, we'd like to do a House Tour. A House Tour consists of shows in your living room where we charge a certain amount (we obviously need to make money to tour ;-), and we play an hour long or so Acoustic set in your home for you and your friends on Acoustic instruments. We'll hang out as long as you'll have us, we'll chat, have fun, and just have a good time. The date range you have to choose from will be from October 1st-October 30th. You can email BTTHOUSESHOWS@GMAIL.COM to book your show. We'll let you know how much money we'll need to make it happen to travel city to city. It's on a first come, first serve basis, but the routing will have to make sense, so as requests come in we may have to change accordingly. The deadline for show requests will be September 25th. (Overseas is excluded, sorry guys, but thanks for everything.)

Now as far as the Southeast region, we'll be playing a string of final full band shows in late November into early December. It will most likely consist of an Atlanta, Jacksonville, Tampa, and of course a final Orlando show. So be looking for those. After that, you'll only have our CD's to remind you.

Lastly, and we're not making any promises, but we're going to try our hardest to record any songs that we ever wrote that didn't make it on past records, or even ones we maybe had in mind for records to come. It may be 3 songs, or it may be 13 songs, it all just depends on what we have time for. When we finish we'll throw it up on iTunes for everyone to download if they choose to. Look for that by December.

In case anyone asks what we'll do now and are curious on a personal level, none of us are really sure? Ryan is an incredibly talented individual. His voice is something that will carry him through life no matter what. He may do some composing, he may just write songs, I'm not sure, but I do know he'll find his way in music. As far as Josh he too will always be in music. He is an incredible drummer and musician. He is the one that introduced me to music and I look up to him immensely. He will probably end up playing drums for a country band (hey hey T-Swift), but will definitely be doing some studio work. He's also mentioned Architecture quite a bit. I'm sure me and him will end up opening some sort of Butler Brothers business :) For now, I'll head back to school, get a degree, and see what happens. I may be looking into taking in everything I've learned in a touring band and putting it to use in Band Management, so look for that from me. We'll all continue to write music. We all contributed to BTT, so I'm sure you'll see traces of that in all of our future projects. Just know that all of us will still be involved in music in some facet or another. Also know that we all love each other more than you know and will always be the best friends that drove away on that first tour 5 years ago.

One last note. As some of you may know, we had the opportunity to share the stage with our pseudo 4th member Stevie Benz for the past 8 or 9 months. He's been great and been more than we could ask for in not only a hire on guitarist, but a great friend. When you spend as much time together as we do, it's hard to not feel as though we're all family. Had BTT continued, the idea of making Stevie official was a thought in the forefront of all of our minds. So we all sat down and talked and decided that it would only feel right if Stevie finished it out the right way. Josh, Ryan, and myself have decided to officially re-add a 4th member and make Stevie that person. These final 3 months will feel complete for us, as we know it will for him. Beyond Between The Trees, Stevie will continue as a touring guitarist, so I am sure you will see him on a stage near you in no time.

Well, it's been a fun ride. Thank you for everything guys. Thank you for coming to shows, buying CD's, buying merch, and listening to our music. Hope to see you all in these coming months and the memories that will follow.

Sincerely,
Jeremy, Josh, Ryan, and Stevie
Between The Trees
