Album Review: "I Know Who My Friends Are" by Christopher John

>> On February 26th, 2011, Christopher John will be releasing his first EP under his own name. Although this latest project is his way of making music on his own, Chris acknowledges every person that has ever supported him through the title (and title track) of the EP - I Know Who My Friends Are. Through this EP, Chris gets back to his acoustic roots and shows that this is the music he was born to make.

>> The EP starts off with "Optimistic." This track is sweet and upbeat, much like its name. It has a great pop sound with some characteristics of rock and roll thrown in as well. "Beautiful Day" begins with a strong guitar line, growing with the addition of a tambourine and drums until the vocals come in. This song is everything you could ask for in a solid pop rock song- It's catchy, and it has great energy behind it.

>> "I Know Who My Friends Are" builds off of the energy established in the previous track, and brings it to a completely different level. This will be the song that everyone remembers, and for good reason. Through this song, Chris succeeds in making every listener think about who their friends are, and shows how important they can be. "Case of the Mondays" is another song that virtually everyone can relate to. It refers to the phrase "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," and this is perfectly portrayed through the lyrics. The message is simple: don't drown yourself in work. Everyone needs to come up for air eventually, and what better time to do that than the weekend?

>> Chris saved the best for last with "Isn't It A Wonder." This song consists of some of the most adorable and genuine lyrics ever written by this artist. Starting out with a sweet combination of guitar and piano, this final track is bound to make anyone smile. It's full of honesty, passion, and soul.

>> Written with great energy and positive thoughts in mind, I Know Who My Friends Are is an EP that everyone can truly enjoy. Whether it's the relate-able lyrics or the catchy choruses that draw listeners in, each song has something worth hearing over and over. Be sure to download the EP on February 26th and dare to ask yourself, do you know who your friends are?

New EP From The Blue Pages

>> The Blue Pages will release a new 5-song EP, titled “Anthropology,” on February 1st, 2011. The album will be available for digital download through Bandcamp.

>> Anthropology has more of a true rock sound than the band's previous album, which lead singer Zac Barnett attributes to the band’s relocation:
“The new EP was very much inspired by our recent move from Boston to Brooklyn. During our first week in the city, a close friend of mine invited me to see one of New York’s up-and-coming bands, Atomic Tom. It was refreshing to see a band portray pop rock music with an upbeat mentality, but still keep the emotion close to the songs. Anthropology really taps into our primary influences which include Bloc Party, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, U2 and so on. We love big, epic rock bands and we hope to have captured something similar to that while still maintaining The Blue Pages’ pop hooks and subtle electronic influence.”
>> The Blue Pages have partnered up with the nonprofit organization Education Through Music, which provides quality music instruction to disadvantaged schools throughout New York City. The mission of this organization is something all members of the band strongly advocate, and therefore The Blue Pages will be donating 50% of all album proceeds from Anthropology to Education Through Music.

>> Download the band's single "Run Back Home" for free on Bandcamp. If you like it, make sure to download Anthropology on February 1st.

Local Spotlight: Patent Pending

>> For those that haven't been properly introduced to the band, Patent Pending is a great pop-punk band from Long Island, NY. The band is made up of 5 members, and is surrounded by one of the biggest, most supportive families I've ever encountered. This 'family' consists of singer Joe Ragosta's brothers (also musicians), close friends of the band, and anyone who has ever come out to a show or bought a CD.

>> This band is very passionate about their music, but they never take themselves, or much else, too seriously. They recently released a video recommended for fans of mustaches, Burt Reynolds, Charles Barkley, sweet harmonies, & Saves The Day covers. Watch the second episode of "Joe & His Bros," featuring Joe Ragosta, his brother Robert, and Jon Biegen (singer of Love, Robot) below.

>> One thing the band does take seriously, however, is helping people. Since the beginning, Patent Pending has set out to help as many people as they can with their music. In the video below, Joe explains the story behind the song "One Less Heart To Break." He gets emotional while describing how important it is to hang in there even when things seem hopeless, but as the song states, "It's always darkest before the light." Watch the video, and know that everything said is 100% genuine.

>> Patent Pending was recently included in Less Than Jake's free tour sampler. This digital compilation includes music from Less Than Jake, Punchline, Transit, and many more. Click here to download this sampler for free.

Matt Nistler: Journalist At Large

>> Picking up writing skills “on the job” and gaining support from his superiors, Matthew Nister worked his way up from a layout designer of a college newspaper to the founder of TheSoundAlarm.com.

>> Matt Nistler graduated from Bemidji State University in Northern Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in design technology. His talents in graphic design, combined with his interest in writing would eventually fuel his career.
Even though I was the designer for the newspaper (‘The Northern Student’), I picked up a lot of journalism tips and tricks from my time there,” Nistler said. “I wrote a number of articles for the newspaper, when spaces needed to be filled up. My journalism training was ‘on the job’.”
>> Nistler noticed that The Daily Chorus, a respectable music website, was looking for reviewers. After being added to their staff, Nistler eventually began writing for other sites as well, and went on to create his own, titled The Sound Alarm.
“I get to promote music I love, and the writers get to do the same and get a lot of cool opportunities and perks such as free music and concert tickets,” he said. “Deserving bands and labels get free promotion, and readers get informed and can possibly discover their next favorite band.”
>> The benefits of running his own site seem endless, but Nistler cited writers’ block, keeping each review unique, not being too biased, and deadlines as some of the challenges faced in this profession. One of the major challenges is keeping things consistent.
“All of my The Sound Alarm writers have different skills and abilities, so it’s my job to make sure everything is proper, standardized and high quality,” he said. “Journalism requires a lot of coordination.”
>> Nistler also has some meaningful advice for those interested in a career similar to his.
“You don’t have to go to journalism school or be getting paychecks from the New York Times to be a journalist,” he said. “If you’re passionate and knowledgeable about the piece you are working on it will show.”
>> With enthusiasm and willingness to learn, virtually anyone can have a shot at becoming a journalist.
“The harder you work on honing your skills the more you'll improve your writing,” Nistler stated.

Interview: Carson

>> With only days remaining before the band enters the studio, Carson took the time out to answer some questions. They have a lot of big plans, but they don't take themselves too seriously. They're dedicated to doing what they love - making music, and they're not letting anything stand in their way.

Carson is...

Taisha Bethea (19) - vocals
Peter Stipicevic (20) - guitar
Shaun Couture (18) - guitar
Spencer Caudill (19) - bass
Ben Laun (19) - drums

Where are you from? Describe the local music scene there.
We're all from different states but live in the Charlotte, North Carolina area. The music scene here is mostly hardcore/metal but we don't mind. We all listen to some heavier music and everybody loves a good mosh. Even if it's at home by yourself because you're too scared to be in the pit...

How did the band come together?
The band came together in a completely conventional way. All members moved to the area at different times but met in high school. Ben played in a band with Peter for awhile. That fizzled out but they stuck together. Ben got in touch with Taisha, a friend from school, and the three wrote together for months. Shaun emailed us and joined after the first jam. Perfect fit. Spencer came from another local band to play bass. That was in October of 2009 and we've been going strong ever since.

For those who haven't heard it yet, how would you describe your music?
The music that most people have heard from us on our Myspace and Purevolume pages is pop/punk/rock. We recorded those three songs in our earliest stages when we did not yet have our full lineup. Needless to say, our sound has changed completely. We are recording a new EP in January of this year. People can expect to hear what they wouldn't expect from a previously pop/punk band. We'd like to think our sound is now more aggressive, more mature, and better overall. Stay tuned for a release date and let us know what you think!

You're going into the studio soon. Tell us about what you have planned.
Ben tracks drums on January 23rd with producer Jamie King (Between the Buried and Me, He is Legend). We're planning to record a 5 song EP. A release date has not yet been set but we'll be in touch with everybody about that. We're really really excited to get something out that is current.

What is your writing process like?
We don't really have a set writing process. That's something we're still trying to figure out. Shaun, Peter, Ben, and Spencer all play guitar so music ideas come from everywhere really. Taisha is constantly writing lyrics and melodies. At practice we just try and hash out whichever jam we're most into at the time. Sometimes we sit on song ideas for weeks and sometimes a song is written in an hour. Either way, we love it.

Out of all the songs you've written so far, which are you most proud of?
Out of all the songs we have written so far, we are definitely most proud of the music that will be on our new EP. Our songs online right now were written in our early stages. We wrote how we knew other bands wrote. In writing our new material, however, we feel as if we have slowly developed a 'Carson' sound. Each new song we write feels a little better than the last. It's awesome to hear how we have grown as a band. New song ideas that are coming out in practice today are no exception. We're excited to keep going.

What are some of the problems you've encountered as a band?
Being in a band is tough. We are five completely different, growing people coming together to do one thing. Any band that says they write without problems and get along perfectly is not telling the truth. Sometimes we disagree. Sometimes people can't make it to practice. It's very much like a family. Fortunately for us, we don't take ourselves too seriously and we are very open about everything. It's the best way. We are each 1/5 of the band and we wouldn't have it any other way.

What motivates you to keep going when times get tough?
When times get tough (and they do get tough) we are quick to remind ourselves how lucky we are to be in this band. We remember how much fun it is to play and write music with our best friends. We look at all the people who have helped us out online with Street Teams, Fan Sites, etc. We think about the alternative - not playing music. Any lack of sleep, disagreement, or bad day holds no weight against those things.

How can fans get in contact with you or hear your music?
Anybody can add us on our personal Facebook pages. We love to make new friends. We have plans for www.carsonrock.com to be up soon. Also, check out these sites...

Is there anything else you'd like to say?
Thank you to everybody who has listened to our music, come to any of our shows, promoted us online, promoted us not online, taken time to talk to us. anything. everything. We notice. Keep in touch!

Tour Update: Giants At Large

>> Ever wonder what it's like to be on tour? I recently spoke to Brian Thomann, bassist of Giants At Large, about his experiences on the band's current tour. Giants At Large are about halfway through their tour, and they already have plenty of stories to tell.

What did you expect your first tour to be like?
I expected it to be like every tour DVD I've ever seen. Hanging out with friends, playing music and enjoying everything.

Has this tour met those expectations so far?
I've done everything I'd hoped. So far we played a lot of new states I've never played, made some really awesome friends, and met some really strange people that made all of us laugh.

How do these shows compare to shows back on Long Island?
Right now it's weird because with the exception of Richmond so far no one has known the words, but most kids seem to really enjoy it.

Are people in other states open to hearing your music?
Yeah. We spend most afternoons at malls asking kids to listen and try to make it out to shows, a good deal actually like it and ask if it is us which is cool.

Have you encountered any problems so far?
Um yeah, funny story. In Florida (if you know about Valet Parking's last Florida encounter you'll enjoy this) I was driving and we had a little under 1/4 tank of gas and then cruise control shut off and the pedal fell to the floor. I merged over to the shoulder and we pushed the van and trailer like 500 feet to a rest stop and waited for triple a. Everything turned out fine but it was a tense 2 hours.

How has this affected the band?
Not at all, we haven't let it get under a quarter tank and I checked the air filter and put in fuel injector cleaner to make sure that there's no more problems and we get better millage.

What do you have planned for the rest of the tour?
Well today is January 15th, and we just got to our friend Wheels' house after a Richmond show that was way too much fun. Tomorrow is Newport News, then Roanoke. I'm excited for the Croc Rock show with Score 24.

Do you have any advice for other bands planning to go on tour?
Make sure you know that it's gonna be a lot of work, a lot of promo, a lot of sleeping in a van and if you don't make any money in merch you gotta pay for gas. Also make sure you can spend money on food and not waste it. I've spent under 5 bucks everyday, with the exception of Ci Ci's where i spend 5.24 haha.

>> While broken down in Florida, the guys decided to make the best of a bad situation and recorded an acoustic version of "Atlantic Beach." You can watch their video for it below.
