Seen It Live: The Wonder Years Perform "The Upsides"

>> The Wonder Years released their most recent album, The Upsides, in September through Hopeless Records. I named this my number one album from 2010, and for good reason. This album is the epitome of everything pop punk should be. Vocals that don't need to be perfect, honest lyrics anyone can relate to, plenty of energy and passion in every song, and a message of positivity- The Upsides really has it all. The Wonder Years succeeded in making an album that tells a story people will want to hear again and again, something virtually every artist strives for. Recently, The Wonder Years played a string of holiday shows with Veara and A Loss For Words where they performed The Upsides in its entirety. I was lucky enough to attend one of these shows on December 17th.

>> Before the show, I knew three of the four bands that would be playing. I first met Veara back in April when I saw them on Toursick with A Day To Remember. My friend Brian (a pop-punk addict) told me to listen to A Loss For Words and The Wonder Years maybe a month beforehand, and I'm really glad I did. I fell in love with albums from each band at the same time, and was therefore thrilled to see them play at the same show.

>> The opening act, Nix86, was the only band I was unaware of before the show began. This band has 7 members (2 Daves, 2 Johns, a George, a Craig, and a JT), and with that comes crazy amount of energy that transferred from the band to the crowd. Right from the start, we saw the emergence of pits in the crowd, even though only about half of the total audience had entered the venue at that time. The saxophone helped create a wild atmosphere during the entire set. The band's overall sound was somewhat rough around the edges, and it took a little getting used-to for those people just entering the venue.

>> Seeing Veara for the second time was something I had really been looking forward to. The band has received a lot of well deserved attention since April, and it was great being able to see how their fan base has grown so much in only a few months. The energy in the venue doubled as the band took the stage, and it continued to increase through the set. Veara performed their single "My B-Side Life" as well as several other songs from their album What We Left Behind. I was able to catch up with bassist Bryan Kerr after the show, and he said that he prefers shows like this over shows played in bigger venues (such as the 2 sold-out dates the band played at the Nokia Theatre in April). Not to say that he doesn't enjoy those too, but Bryan said that it's easier to connect with fans at smaller shows, and that's what it's really all about. That's why supporting bands like Veara is so important- They're just trying to do something they love, and hopefully it's something the fans will love too.
Video: "We Have A Body Count" by Veara

>> My definition of a truly great pop punk show involves plenty of moshing, jumping around, and overall electricity in the crowd. There was plenty of that while A Loss For Words was on the stage. People jumping on top of each other to try and connect with the band and shouting the lyrics back at the singer continued to raise the energy within the crowd with no end in sight. Those few that didn't know any of the words for the band's original songs got a treat when A Loss For Words covered "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5. They really reinvented the song, infusing it with their punk style and genuinely having fun with it. The band also played "40 Thieves", and my favorite, "Heavy Lies The Crown", which you can watch below. If you're looking for a punk band with solid vocals, A Loss For Words is the band for you.

>> Finally, the wait was over - The Wonder Years stormed out on stage, broke into "My Last Semester", and a true ruckus ensued. It seemed like the crowd was out of control before, but nothing compared to what went on once The Wonder Years began to play. The band ran through the tracklisting for their album, playing songs like "Logan Circle", "It's Never Sunny In South Philadelphia", and "Hey Thanks", all in order. The passion displayed by the band was magnified in the crowd, and I didn't see a single person standing still. Overall, it was an incredible experience being able to hear The Upsides live in its entirety.

>> Don't be too upset if you missed these holiday shows. The Wonder Years will be playing on the Vans Warped Tour this summer, so there's still a chance to see the band play your favorites.

A Look Back: The Hardships of 2010

>> 2010 was truly an eventful year in the music industry. Good Charlotte finally released a new album, 14 year old girls couldn't stop talking about that Justin kid with the nice hair, Paramore made great advances in becoming a household name, Something Corporate played a reunion tour, and Ke$ha was... herself. But people don't seem to acknowledge the bands that were overcoming obstacles and taking chances trying to make a name for themselves. I'm not trying to only address the negative events of the year, but one recent event made me realize that artists deserve more recognition for everything they go through in order to share their music with us, the fans.

>> The chain of events that occurred between December 16 - December 22, 2010 provided me with a great example of the hardships musicians face. Back in July, I met my friends Seth & Zakk at a show at the Vibe Lounge here on Long Island. They're from Cape Cod, MA and don't play around here all that often. I got them another show at the Vibe on Thursday December 16th. The way it worked out, this show was on a Thursday with bands even I've never heard of. Seth & Zakk played second, for about 15 people: 3 people who worked there, 9 or so people from the other bands playing that night, a few people I didn't know, and me. In all honesty, I was more upset about the poor turnout than my friends were. They said things like this happen, and that they just treat it like a practice. It was great to see that even with only a handful of people in front of them, the guys made the most of it. You can tell that music is really what they live for, the passion behind every note is obvious to anyone who has ever seen them perform. After they played, one of them said something that completely changed my perspective on things:
It doesn't matter if we play for 5 people or 500. At the end of the day, that's still 5 more people that have heard our music and have given us a chance.
>> We left after they played & the guys stayed at my house that night. (*Note: This is by no means a common occurrence.) The next morning, their van wouldn't start. It wasn't in the best condition to start with, considering it was from 2000 & had over 300,000 miles on it. Long story short, the guys ended up taking a train to New York City, then another to Rhode Island.
"We had to hail a ride by hitting up every person in our contacts and finally got a hit from a friend. Hah, so it was a stroke of luck that we got out of RI." - Zakk
>>They had to leave the van at my house, which is a good 5 hours away from where they live. Zakk had to borrow a car to drive back down that Sunday (2 days later) just to find out that the van started this time, and the tow company wouldn't take it. He had to drive back home by himself without the van, having gone a total of 10 hours out of his way for nothing. He came back down again the next day, and the van died again after going only a few blocks. He ended up having the van taken to a junk yard on December 22nd since it wasn't worth trying to fix it. Now they're working without the van, which will make it much harder to get to shows, let alone get all of their equipment there too. It was a really complicated, stressful, drawn out situation that nobody should have to experience, but it was handled with determination and only mild frustration.

>> This is only one example of the hardships faced by artists every day. They do their best to make music they can be proud of, and hope that fans will enjoy it just as much. These musicians aren't looking for fame (although they probably wouldn't mind it). Their main goal is to do what they love and share it with people who might love it too. That's why it's always important to support lesser-known artists. Bands like Envy On The Coast and Bayside have a great following today, but they started out as local bands here on Long Island. Bayside has been together for 10 years, but they've faced their share of hardships along the way. The same can be said for Envy, who actually broke up in 2010 due to various obstacles in the industry, and within the band itself.

>> Just because a band has signed with a label, it doesn't mean that they are guaranteed "success." Just because you've never heard of a band, it doesn't mean that they don't deserve your attention. My goal in writing this isn't to highlight the negatives about being a musician, but to show how much these artists go through to share their music with whoever is willing to listen. Next time you get one of those annoying messages on Facebook from some guy asking you to check out his band, give them a chance. Who knows, they might turn out to be your new favorite.

RIP Finch (1999 - 2010)

>> After being together for about 11 years, Finch have announced their break up. The official statement from the band as well as the band's final two songs can be seen/streamed below.
Dear Finch fans,
....
.. ..
Over the past two years we as a band have obsessed tirelessly trying to bring you the best record Finch has ever made. Blowing everything else out of the water was the only option. If we couldn't drop the bomb, we wouldn't blow it up.....
.. ..
....From the beginning what's always made up the sound of Finch was our ability to take our individual influences, no matter how different, and write music together that stands on it's own. A tense balancing act on a loose wire where we have had success crossing and also lost balance to fall and be broken. Over the past few years we have collectively gone insane trying to achieve the common goal of writing our new record. It's become obvious to all of us that the thing that made Finch such a special band to be in, was also the key ingredient that was tearing us apart. As we get older and broaden our musical pallets, we are all on separate planets drifting further and further out of orbit. Finch is our sun, it has given us everything that we have. This year our sun imploded. Although we travel through darkness. It's comforting to know that we are all still friends. Together floating in the unknown.
....
.. ..
....We want to thank you for your undying love and support of our band. Without you, accomplishing our wildest dreams would not have been possible. We apologize deeply for letting you down. Please forgive us and please keep listening to Finch.
.. ..
Thank you for Finch.
.. ..
-Finch....
As a parting gift we leave to you:
2 new songs (Hail To The Fire) & (World Of Violence)
A bonus version of the 2008 self titled EP (3 extra tracks)
"A Far Cry From Home - Live in Tokyo 2009" (18 Songs)
"Bury White" Far Cover (Free download)
AVAILABLE @ bandcamp
We're also selling off our merch stocks cheap, get it here

Josh and Zac Farro Leave Paramore

>> According to an announcement posted on paramore.net earlier today, it has been confirmed that founding guitarist and drummer Josh and Zac Farro have left Paramore. The remaining members (frontwoman Hayley Williams, guitarist Taylor York and bassist Jeremy Davis) plan to keep the band going. Read the complete announcement below.
Posted by Paramore
December 18, 2010

Over the past 6 years, our band has been through some of the most intense and incredible experiences of our lives. None of these things have been without trial. We've worked so hard to get to where we are and the fact that you are all still here with us says something about you that we will never be able to truly understand. You have stuck with us through thick and thin and we are so grateful. A couple of months ago, Josh and Zac let us know they would be leaving the band after our show in Orlando last Sunday. None of us were really shocked. For the last year it hasn't seemed as if they wanted to be around anymore. We want Josh and Zac to do something that makes them happy and if that isn't here with us, then we support them finding happiness elsewhere. But we never for a second thought about leaving any of this behind. We really hope that you can be encouraged by the fact that the three of us who are still here are ready to take on another chapter of our journey together. You have always been what keeps us going so why would we stop now? We want to stick by you. Knowing that we have a unified passion and a clear vision makes us feel stronger than ever.

The "blog" that was posted regarding everything that is going on with our band was a fake. We aren't sure who did it or why... And we aren't sure how they timed it this way. This is the first time that we have spoken out about what's going on and we wouldn't have released an official statement that important through a personal blog. So, we're sorry for any confusion and just to remain clear, this is the first time we have spoken out about this.

We have some amazing things lined up for next year starting with our tour in South America. We are still coming to you and we are excited about who we are bringing with us! The tour is still on and we can't wait to see you all.

As we look back, and now as we look with excitement to the future, in all of this what truly matters are the good times. The pictures of us with our arms around each other, the long van rides, your faces while you sing along as we play. Thank you for getting us right here to this very moment. We look forward to our best times. And we hope you will go there with us.

Love,
Hayley, Jeremy & Taylor
