Taking Back Sunday Perform New Song at Acoustic Show on LI

>> Last night (8/29/13), Taking Back Sunday performed a semi-secret acoustic set at The Leaky Lifeboat Inn in Seaford, NY.  It was semi-secret because following a day of hinting at a potential show via twitter and instagram, vocalist Adam Lazzara officially announced the show yesterday afternoon.  The band, or at least Adam and bandmate John Nolan, were initially slated to perform for an hour.  Due to the overwhelming demand, a second set was added immediately following the first.  During one of these two "surprise" acoustic sets, the band performed a new song live for some lucky fans.  The track is tentatively called "The Bird You Cannot Change" but based on the video, it looks like that title isn't definite.  Either way, it's worth a watch.  Check out Mike Fishkin's video of the performance below.

 >> Taking Back Sunday recently announced that they have signed with Hopeless Records and are working on a new record set to be released in Spring 2014.

 >> I posted some fan pictures of the "surprise" acoustic show on Instagram! Check them out here.  If you were there, tag your photos with #themusicobsession!

Interview: Desmond Zantua of Bellwether

>> Bellwether have been making a name for themselves in the Long Island music scene ever since they released their first song back in 2010.  That first song sparked a different way of thinking, and it paved the way for a lot of what I've seen in the local pop punk scene recently.  The band's line up and style have changed gradually since 2010, but one thing has remained the same - this band won't quit.  Everything they put out is full of raw energy, passion, and has an attitude that is all its own.

>> I recently spoke with the band's vocalist, Desmond Zantua, after their set at With The Punches' last Long Island show at The Wood Shop.  We talked about wrestling, acoustic stuff, jumping through walls, touring, secrets, the New York Islanders, and some other cool and totally relevant things.

An Interview with Desmond of Bellwether

>> If you haven't seen it yet, check out Bellwether's video for "Compromise" below.  If you like what you hear, download the band's ...but I Have To EP on bandcamp.

>> Also, catch the Bellwether on their upcoming Canadian tour with Seaway:

Need A Laugh?: "Every Pop Punk Vocalist" Video

>> A video called "Every Pop Punk Vocalist" has gone viral in the music scene over the past few days.  The video pokes fun at things you might overhear at a pop punk show.  It's exaggerated, silly, and definitely worth a watch.

>> There's also a similar video titled "Every Metalcore Vocalist," which you can watch here.

We're Expanding. (It's About Damn Time)

Intern, guest writer, professional concert attendee -
Whatever you want to call yourself, I need your help.

>> I started this site over 5 years ago.  I have been doing this since I was still in high school, and I have loved every second of it.  It's just me writing and keeping things afloat, but things have changed since high school (thank goodness).  So, while I take pride in being super hands-on with everything published on this page, I'm at the point where I need some help.  That's where you come in.

>> Since I am currently a team of one, there are a lot of events that I can't cover and albums I don't have time to review. I hate that.  Whether a show is in a different state or is the same night as another show, if I like the artist, I still want to be able to help promote them.  Same goes with album reviews - just because I have an exam to study for or something of the like, that shouldn't stop a review from being published here.

>> Personal notes aside, The Music Obsession is looking to take on a few interns.
Things I'm looking for:
  • Someone passionate about music and live shows
  • A self-motivated, dedicated individual who can meet any deadlines
  • Someone who is on top of their social media game - I share all of my posts on twitter, Facebook, tumblr, and even instagram.  You'll be doing the same.
  • You can't be afraid to network, online or in real life. Talking to people is super helpful in all aspects of life, and it definitely makes a difference in the music industry.
  • Someone who can work a camera - I get a lot of photography opportunities, and being able to film an acoustic session or an interview is pretty important too.

>> If you become an intern (hooray!):
  • Any review or interview you do will be published on the site with your name at the bottom, giving you full credit for your work.  Same goes with photography.
  • Having your writing / photography published will be a great resume builder and will give you helpful (and awesome) experience for the future.
  • You'll be asked to review albums and cover live events, and potentially interview some artists.
  • This would be a great way for you to get your name out there and to take your first steps into the world of the music industry.  Seriously, I'll have you doing cool things. Promise.

>> If you're interested, email katerussellftw@gmail.com with the subject "TMO Intern."  Please include your full name, where you're from, how old you are, and what experience you have (a resume, essentially). Also, a writing sample is highly preferred.  If you have any questions, include those in the email and I'll get back to you ASAP.

I'm looking forward to expanding the TMO team.
Let's take over the internet, one tweet at a time.
- Kate
